Day 15 → A fanfic

Burying Yesterday by WickedFox

A Buffy/Giles post-series New Year's fic! I probably rec'd this ages ago, but, it's still one of my favorites, and totally appropriate since this is still New Year's weekend. Barely.

Okay, I just finished watching Hua Mulan. First of all, absolutely beautiful movie. Secondly, I spent most of the movie finding Tiger absolutely adorable and going "OMG, he is like the spitting image of Jackie Chan."



SEE? And do you know why I kept thinking that? Because he is totally Jackie Chan's son. I had NO IDEA.

Dude was even delivering his comedic lines exactly like Jackie. But, he is certainly no match in the martial arts department. And he is heaps better at acting than Jackie is. He completely stole this film. HE MADE ME CRY WITH HIS WONDERFULNESS. A LOT. And the Mulan/Wentai romance was all epic and repressed and totally tragic and BEAUTIFUL and it was hard to look at it as not slash even though he knew she was a woman, because they were so very much brothers in arms and it was all about respect and admiration and understanding and everyone assumed she was a dude and they'd have these little moments where she touches his face or something and someone walks in and is all, "Uh... *ahem* General?" But you know where the real love story was? Tiger/Turtle. Oh yes (keep in mind all of these names are coming from the subtitles that I downloaded, so forgive me if these names are completely translated wrong). Oh, Turtle. Oh, Tiger. *sniff* It is kind of insane though that this movie was supposed to cover 12 years. I kept going, "Wait, what? Year 8? What the heck happened to year 2? What? It's been TWELVE YEARS? WHAT THE HELL?" But even though it was confusing, I actually prefer that, because this way the movie did not drag at all, it just kept getting right to the point in each act. And Mulan was so freaking kickass. Oh, she was amazing. But at the same time, she didn't exactly have a standout personality or an unruly spirit. She was just a girl that wanted to save her father and simply survive. But her superior skills put her ahead of the pack and allowed her to be as successful as she was. And her success and noble spirit in battle made her men willing to die for her. It was just a really wonderful movie. The bad guy was insane and a little homoerotic, classic Chinese movie villain. *sigh* I was kind of hoping for a bigger showdown at the end, but I still dug how it all ended. Basically, I really loved this movie, and Jaycee Chan is my future husband if me and Ed Helms don't work out.

Day 14 → A non-fictional book



This book is both fascinating and utterly hilarious, and the bits about the family dinners/get-togethers remind me of the early days of my childhood quite a bit.

Over Qualified by miakun (Uther/Merlin, modern AU, NC-17)

Merlin is Uther's assistant. He is still mighty clumsy and Uther is still very perplexed by him. Uther is all temperamental and Merlin is silently challenging. I freaking love the power dynamics in this fic. I think I just really love the idea of Uther being at the mercy of someone else because his love or passion for them is so consuming that he just gives up the power, but the other person willingly submits themselves to him, and this trend is big with Uther/Morgana and Uther/Merlin, so, I think that's why I dig those ships so much. Anyway, I really enjoyed this highly porny fic.

On a slightly unrelated note, I will be utterly shocked if no one writes an Avatar!Merlin fic. Perhaps this is just my weird habit of watching any movie and contemplating how it would fit into the Merlin world, but seriously, Avatar? That movie so needs to be Merlin ficced. Arthur = Jake, obviously. Morgana is Grace, Merlin is Neytiri, Will is Tsu'tey, Uther is Parker (and yes, I was majorly shipping Grace/Parker, but I think I was the only one. Everyone else seems to have been shipping Jake/Grace), the Witchfinder is that insane Colonel guy, Gwen is Trudy, Lancelot is Norm (maybe?). Not sure how Gaius would fit into it. And I suppose Balinor and Hunith would be the parents. But anyway, instead of blue cat people acting like Native Americans, it would be a world of druids. Or something. I don't know, but... surely someone somewhere is constructing a Merlin/Arthur fic modeled after the Jake/Neytiri love story, right? It's just begging for it. I didn't even like Avatar all that much and this is going through my head.

2. So, not too long ago I was talking about how Beauty and the Beast was the very first love story to ever move me. Or at least, it was the first love story that actually captured my interest, and so it's always been a favorite of mine, and most of the ships that I ship have a Beauty and the Beast sort of element to them. Well... what did I come across today that made my LIFE?

4. The promo for the latest iCarly looks like it will have some epic Carly/Freddie and Sam/Spencer moments. THIS PLEASES ME GREATLY. But obviously the commercial is LYING THROUGH ITS NONEXISTENT TEETH because it wants to rev up all the Carly/Freddie vs Sam/Freddie shippers. Whatever dudes. I don't care who dates who, because in my mind, no matter what, it's simply canon that Spencer and Sam end up together about ten years from now. They just do.

5. I was playing Paper Mario again last night, and now I think I ship Mario/Vivian? What is with Paper Mario making me ship things? It's Mario, for pete's sake! But clearly Mario's one true love should be Vivian and not Princess Peach. Although I am starting to suspect that Mario is gay, because he's got all these ladies loving up on him and he seems to be immune. Hmm... Still though, Bowser/Peach is my OTP. IT IS LOVE! UNHEALTHY, BUMBLING LOVE! It is no weirder than Peach/TEC. Seriously, that computer is such a perv. OH, THIS GAME! It's so ridiculous.

6. I watched Avatar today. It was... okay, I guess. The animation was pretty, and I adored the war scenes, but the story was pretty unoriginal, and the acting was kind of laughable here and there. The first hour or so was quite boring, but it picked up after the main dude got captured and I got really into it. It even made me cry. Whoever did the voice for the girl was pretty darn good. And the facial reactions for her were spectacular. So, I do praise the movie for that. And the actual world they created was somewhat original. But it was basically a mixture of Ferngully and Pocahontas with aliens.
